On September 2, 2025, at the SCO summit in Tianjin Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced that Alatau City will receive a special legal status. This will give Alatau City opportunity to set regulation aligned with international norms to develop industries of the future. Alatau City, the flagship project in Almaty region, aims to become a regional hub for innovation, AI, crypto, and technological entrepreneurship, with construction supported by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation.

Alatau City is envisioned as a “city of the future”, promoting sustainability, foreign investment, and economic diversification while leveraging its strategic location near cross-border trade routes.
